Think about the cunning contradiction, they are moisturizing yet you need a moisturizer; they are oil but not facial oil. Ahh ! then what they are.

Read on and you will get all your answers–

A serum is a super potent skincare product. A face serum is scientifically formulated with specialized ingredients like antioxidants, skin-replenishing, skin restoring, age-defying and smoothing agents. They are a particularly different type of product as they host the high concentration of active ingredients and distinctive texture.

They do work wonders for specific skin concerns with the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin layers, with their much smaller molecule. They deliver magnificent results in a much faster manner and works as a great tool for arresting wrinkles and other problems. Face Serums are both oil based and water based on usually smooth and a lighter texture that could be absorbed easily and works fast.

Yes and no!  Based on their formulations. If a serum has ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Niacinamide, Glycerine or Vitamin E then it’s a moisturizing one. These type of face serums are directed to offer hydration and eventually restores moisture. But then, their light texture and ability to penetrate deeper into the epidermis make them different from regular moisturizers which are on the heavier side and creates a barrier on the top layer of skin.

On the other hand, if you see ingredients like Retinol, Vitamin C, Antioxidants etc signifies that they are formulated to cater with specific skin concerns like signs of aging or dark sports or rough surface etc. You should not expect it to be a moisturizing agent, though few brands tend to blend some moisturizing agents to toss it to various sections of customer groups.

Well all the serums do mention it to use once or twice but then again as per experts if you are using a serum that has active ingredients like Vitamin A / Retinol/ Vitamin C/ Alpha Arbutin/ Acetyl C or even antioxidants, then these should be applied only during night as during the day they may get oxidized due to exposure to sunlight. So these type of facial serums are best for the night and even replenish aligning with your sleep cycle. It is recommended that always apply moisturizer first before applying the serum. We recommend you to use just one or two pumps of serum as is highly concentrated for your face.

Well, initially you do need to know about the right formulation of face serum for your skin. I have compiled a certain piece of information for ingredients and customized serum for specific skin concern.  So if you have:-

  • Signs of Aging/Wrinkles: If you are fighting with signs of aging/wrinkles then go for a serum with Retinol as an ingredient. Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A which has a phenomenal impact on the skin surface as it helps restore a youthful look and reverses sun damage. It is helpful in arresting skin assaults like aging, uneven skin tone, dull skin, enlarged pores, and redness. It promotes firmness, diminishes signs and makes skin look much plumper.
  •  Acne Prone/ Dull/ Spots:  If your skin is acne prone and have dull skin or spots then you should go for the serums that have blends of Vitamin C- in any of its derivatives form. Vitamin C promotes collagen production, speeds skin’s replenishing process, reverses sun damage and reduces inflammation.
  • Dryness:- If your skin is dry then go for a serum with ingredients Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Glycolic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid. Vitamin Ealso known as Tocopherol is a perfect antioxidant that protects cells from any oxidative damage. Niacinamide helps increase skin elasticity, improve ceramide levels in the skin. Glycolic Acid gently exfoliates top layer and lightens discoloration while Hyaluronic Acid helps in retaining moisture up to 70% more than any other ingredient. It is really good for people who have just decided to go for face serums.
  • Dullness:-  For dull skin look for serums that have words like soothing or defense on your their bottle. The chemical ingredients you should hunt for in its composition are- antioxidants like Resveratrol, Niacinamide, Green Tea Extract, Ferulic acid ( these champ any combat free radicals, increase the effectiveness of sunscreen by day and promote cellular repair and healing by night).

Yes, always dab the product into skin don’t rub or else take it on your palm gently spread and slap over your face gently so that the product gets in. As facial serum have tiny molecular structure dabbing them will make them easily penetrate the pores.
